Global Awareness exhibition on APEC Weekend

Written by Lucy Butler

The North Sydney Community Centre’s Changeable Art Space is opening with a global twist as the city closes down on the APEC Weekend. Global diversity and culture will be thriving with a line up of art from Turkey, India, Japan and Vanuatu on Saturday 8th September. The stories of these artists carry a message of humanity and unique strength and sensitivity to culture.

The exhibition will include the works of Gulay Pelin, a Turkish Miniature Artist whose works are inspired by traditional Turkish motifs and Ottoman calligraphy. Her abstract paintings contemplate the dilemmas of the human condition and reflect a fine elaboration with gouache colors and gold leaf.

An exhibition of works by Dr Ajit Godbole which will take the viewer on a journey through the evolution of South Indian Temple Art, from simple to ornate structures. Interpretive maps and captions will help place the site and a henna tattooist will demonstrate her art.
Photographer Jonny Lewis will follow his extensive career and interest in Bougainville and East Timor through projected photographs capturing the faces of pain, hardship and joy.

An interactive installation, capturing the experience of a group of Youth Challenge Australian volunteers working with the Epi community in Vanuatu, will share the experiences and knowledge gained through the two cultures.

Cammeray Primary School students will display their traditional Origami and the children will also be making origami on the day. Live music in the park is Dave Calandra and the Fire Fly dance group will be performing at 1,00pm.

Changeable Art is the backdrop to the North Sydney markets providing a mix of retro fashion to home wares and bric-a-brac. The marriage of the market and Changeable Art at the NSCC will present an exciting and inspiring day out each month, bringing life to the North Sydney District.
