Fire From The Sky the debut EP by Genevieve Little is a rich enchantment of jazz inspired folk and soul music. Heartfelt lyrics are backed throughout by an eclectic duo featuring Anthony Lockhart (Drums/Guitar) and Oliver Hookins (Bass/ Electric Upright/ Viola/ Violin).

Born on the Central coast and only 20 years old, Genevieve Little has created a powerful and fresh Australian sound worth getting excited about! All five tracks on this EP focus on her voice and showcase her ability to use it as a multi timbre instrument with guitar, percussion and strings in accompaniment. Her vocal style hints at influences of Katie Noonan and Tori Amos whilst her powerful lyrics possess a surety and self-awareness of life, power, love and growth.

Track 01 Starry Skies has a more country/folk feel perfectly suited to the ballad-style lyrics with vocal harmony featured in the chorus. The strings backing creates a mellower sound even through the strength of the poppy guitar and drums and the strings prevail with Genevieve’s voice at the end of the song.

All that Matters has a very minor feel towards it in the verses to become a fast-paced positive chorus. The second verse includes male vocals in rounds with Genevieve’s. This sound is very different from Starry Skies as it has a pop sound to it in comparison to the country folk feel. The live track Breathe has a very jazz/blues feel revealing the full range of her vocal strength, ability to scatter and improvise. The track has a very suave jazz club feel about it with the soft guitar and drums backing the strong and powerful vocals. She has a control that would suggest years of classical training and intensifies the aura of her track with it.

Fire From The Sky shows particular refinement of vocal musical abilities, although it does have an amateur feel about it. Each tracks musical style is very different from the last with no common connection so the album on a whole doesn’t really flow. The themes are quite cliché to each style of music presented but it will definitely be enjoyed and Genevieve’s voice will have a strong impact on Australia’s female vocalists. Look out for her upcoming shows around Sydney.
