The Cyclic Defrost Magazine launch - Madame Fling Flongs

"Exposing interested people to new music"

A specialist electronic music magazine called Cyclic Defrost launched the 15th issue of their quarterly publication on Wednesday the 22nd of November and I went along with a few friends to the launch party. We found an intimate and colourful mix of people upstairs at Madame Fling Flongs (http://www.madameflingflong.com.au) listening to music by Pod DJs Calico, Bec Paton, Renae X, ollo and Seb Snarl, and dining on Tapas and cocktails.

Like the magazine, the entry was free and the atmosphere inside was warm and friendly with 30 or so people lounging around on comfy furniture, mingling and conversing at the bar. The network of artists and writers connected to this magazine (and accompanying website and club) is huge and Sydney is fortunate enough to have a group like this contributing to its art & music culture. Sebastian Chan and Matthew Levinson are the main editors and I might add, cluey enough in today’s impoverished funding climate to get support from the Australia Council for the Arts and what looks like a small host of donors to fund the magazine.

The best thing about this magazine is its concentration on the written word. They pretty well much cram the 46 pages of editorial with it and it’s a good read. The advertising is kept to a minimum (excluding fashion, alcohol and clothing) and as is the case with Issue 15, it is presented in glossy colour with eleven articles, music and sleeve reviews and 2 pages of selects. Just take the ten pages of Music Reviews with their own cute classifications (GAIN, HIGHS, MIDS, LOWS & MUTE) and they cover everything from electronics, sound art & contemporary classical, pop n rock in all its forms, Hiphop, drum’n’bass, reggae, ambience, field recordings, outsider, noise and everything that’s unclassifiable. This particular issue features interviews with Bim Ricketson, Deepchild, Nico Muhly, Rune Grammofon, Leafcutter John, Matt Warren, Rebel MP, Winduptoys, Post, Astronomy Class, Kid Koala, and coverage of The Big Chill 2006 plus new music reviews, and sleeve design reviews. Stick on the headphones, grab a copy and introduce yourself to something new.
